Because we were still adjusting to the “new normal” in the fall of 2020, the yearbook staff was looking for a theme that somehow represented that feeling of being lost while still trying to avoid any visual or conceptual clichés that tied too closely to Covid. Initially, the idea had something to do with being “off-road”, but eventually we discovered the rich visuals that might be available to us if we explored maps (a personal interest of my own), so we landed on the theme of “Atlas”.
The result was a graphically rich book, full of map imagery & puns, including a few of my own personal favorite details I’ve ever made for a yearbook: the cover (which includes a detailed vector map of the school on the front as well as all of the roads and neighborhoods surrounding it), a spread inspired by subway maps (below), and the book’s title page. We also had fun with the theme for our annual “College Destinations” spread — incorporating a map on the page for the first time ever.
