I have always had a love for live theatre. In my years at Jesuit Dallas, I’ve played many roles in the school’s theater program, including directing a couple of shows and designing a few sets. But one role that has been consistent for me has been designing posters for all of the school’s theatre productions.
Outside of Jesuit, I have also done work designing poster series for two local theaters: Theatre Three (a 60-year old professional theatre based in Uptown Dallas) and the former Contemporary Theatre of Dallas (which sadly closed its doors in the spring of 2017). I had the fortune of illustrating and designing Theatre Three's posters for six seasons (until the theatre’s founder Jac Adler passed away in 2015) and for CTD for two seasons (before their unfortunate closing). My goal each year working for each theatre was to develop a visual concept that would be consistent across each season’s 8-10 shows but that would also set each season apart from each other, while still remaining true to the theatres’ brands & identity.
Below, you can see two of the season poster series I developed for Theatre Three — two of my favorite concepts in terms of style & consistency — as well as several of my favorite posters for Jesuit Theatre over the last 13 years.
Theatre Three's 2010-2011 Season
In my second year working for Theatre Three, I decided to create a series of flat, stylized vector illustrations for the season's shows. This particular series of designs turned out to be my favorites that I created in my six years of work for the theatre.
Theatre Three's 2014-2015 Season
For the 2014-15 season, I returned to my "simplified" vector style, but this time with a twist: I attempted to create illustrations that made minimal use of color – allowing for each show to have it's own distinct color throughout the season – limiting the pallet of each poster to two shades of the defined color in addition to clack & white. This particular season definitely stands out as maintaining one of the more visually cohesive looks across the series.
Jesuit Theatre Poster Highlights
Although I have designed more than 50 posters for Jesuit's theatre program in my time at the school, these are a few of my particular favorites. As mentioned above, in addition to designing posters, programs and tickets for Jesuit Theatre (as well as directing a few productions myself), I've also created the designs for a couple of Jesuit's sets – which can be seen on another page here on this site.
