In celebration of the school’s 80th anniversary, the staff landed on the theme “Radically Retro” — which was visually represented with imagery influenced by neon signs. Starting with a colorful “sign” designed for the front cover, I also created glowing signs for the division pages throughout the book as well.
Elsewhere in the book, we relied on thin lines with rounded ends and bright colors to provide a more subtle suggestion of the neon signs. Because of the neon sign motif, the entire book was designed in all-black on every page.
Modules were designed to reference “retro” symbols including 1980s-style video cameras, GameBoys, cassette tapes, and Walkman cassette players — which played off of the school’s motto of forming “Men for Others”.
